This summer my husband recommended this little book to me. It is called, The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, by Timothy Keller. When I say little, I mean that it will take you 45 minutes to read all 3 chapters of the book. The book packs a big punch. The truths from it still stick with me in day to day life.
Here is a quote from the book that I think sums the whole thing up.
This is gospel-humility, blessed self-forgetfulness. Not thinking more of myself as in modern cultures, or less of myself as in traditional cultures. Simply thinking of myself less.
It is not about what other people think about me. It is not about dwelling on own flaws and faults. Jesus has paid my debt. He has canceled my shame. It really isn’t about me at all. And this is where I need to get my mind.
This idea has really changed the way I look my life. Romans 8:1-2 says, “ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.“ As my husband says, my audition has been canceled.
