Holly Furtick

A tribute to my in-laws

DSC_0503

This week my in-laws, Faith and Larry Furtick, both celebrate their birthdays (Faith's was on the 28th's, Larry's comes up the 1st).  I truly could not ask for better in-laws.  They have always treated me as if I was their own daughter.

They are also great grandparents.  They have evolved into their role as Grammy and Choo-Choo with grace and patience.

Every year for the past 8 summers we have vacationed at the beach with the Furticks.  When children were added to our vacation, and the days of reading for hours while sitting in a beach chair changed to reading for minutes and sitting in the sand, they rose to the occasion.

Happy birthday Faith, thanks for being such an amazing mom, mother-in-law, and grandmother.  I hope to follow in your footsteps.

Happy birthday L-train, thanks for always treating me with the grace and mercy…the way family should be.

Beside Every Good Man: Kelly Hubatka

You know the saying, “Behind every great man is an even better woman?”
It’s a great saying, one I hope to live up to since I am married to a
great man.  But I think I picture myself beside my man, not behind him.

The men on lead staff at Elevation stand beside some truly great
women.  It is my privilege to lead them and know them and call them my
friends.  And I thought you should know them too.

Today, I would like to introduce you to Kelly Hubatka.

Fam3 Kelly is the wife of Larry Hubatka, the Creative Pastor (overseeing everything you see at Elevation from graphics to print to video) and Pastor of our Uptown Campus.

Kelly and Larry recently celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary and they have four girls: Riley, Lily, Audrey and Lucy.

Kelly and Larry moved to Charlotte in August 2005 from Portland, Oregon for a job at a local Christian TV station.  They started attending Elevation in December of 2005 before we launched our first public service.  Larry and Kelly served in many different volunteer roles before Larry officially came on staff in October 2007.

Kelly supports Larry in all that he does from caring for their girls and their home to caring for his team and their families.  In her spare time she home schools their children and occasionally has lunch with me.  She enjoys exercising (she is a certified personal trainer) and a good cup of coffee.

You can find her at the 9:30 and 11:15 experiences Uptown and occasionally at our Matthews Saturday night worship experience as well.  She is super easy to talk to and would love to meet if you attend our Uptown campus.

You can follow her here on twitter.

Here is a little video we showed at our Uptown campus a few weeks ago.

Arrrrrgh Matey (more vacation pictures)

While vacationing in Florida this year, we took our boys on a Pirate Ship that set sail for a couple hours each evening in the St Augustine harbor.  The boys had a great time (although the grown ups were a bit disappointed with the program for the price we paid).  I got some great photos.

Free Summer Movies

The days of summer can get really long.  We try to keep a little schedule during the week.  We go to the pool, we deliver Friendship Trays, visit the library and a few local parks.

One activity that my kids love is the movie theater.  I'm not sure if you know this but many theaters offer free movies during the week for kids.  They are movies currently on dvd (not a draw back for my kids because they are little and they love to see movies over and over and over).

Regal Cinemas are free and their movies play at 10 am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  You can check out the movie listing and participating theaters here.

AMC charges $1 and their movies are on Tuesdays at 10 am.  You can check out their list here.

What are you doing with your kids this summer?

Fashion File… Cocktail Rings

A super fun trend right now is the cocktail ring.  Cocktail rings became popular in the 1940's and 1950's.  They are dramatic statement rings worn on the middle or index finger.

You would not want to wear a cocktail ring as a part of your every day jewelry but they are a fun way to dress up an outfit for an event or a night on the town.  I love these, they add so much personality.

You can pay lots of money for them, but you don't have to.  I find them all the time in little clearance bins at the checkout counter.  Right now you can buy them at Old Navy, Banana Republic and JCrew as well as other places.

They make a great gift, and many of the stores sell them in adjustable sizes.

Here are a few examples that I found online (the fish is my favorite!).

Beside Every Good Man: Angie Blackson

You know saying, "Behind every great man is an even better woman?"
It's a great saying, one I hope to live up to since I am married to a
great man.  But I think I picture myself beside my man, not behind him.

The men on lead staff at Elevation stand beside some truly great
women.  It is my privilege to lead them and know them and call them my
friends.  And I thought you should know them too.

Today, I would like to introduce you to Angie Blackson.

Blackson family

Josh and Angie have been married for 8 years.  They have three beautiful blond-headed girls, Alyssa, Kaitlyn and Karis.

Angie and her husband were not on our original core team.  Originating in Michigan, they moved around quite a bit until they ended up Charlotte for Josh's job and started attending Elevation in 2006.  In 2008, Josh joined the Elevation staff as our Operations Pastor as well as our Providence Campus Pastor.

Josh and Angie love the outdoors and sports.  They even play on an organized dodge ball team.  The also love to exercise (I guess some do :)).  In fact, in Angie's former pre-children, pre-ministry life she was an exercise therapist.

Angie stepped into her role as a campus pastor's wife as if she had been doing it for years.  She is an incredible leader and she has a heart to know the people of Elevation.  You can usually find her attending the Saturday night worship experience at our Matthews Campus and then at the 9:15 and 11 am worship experiences at Providence on Sundays.

I know Angie would love to meet you if you ever see her out and about at church.  You can also follow her on her family blog here.

Here's a little video we showed to our Providence campus a few weeks ago about their family.

Summer Reading List (with a give away)

I don't consider myself an avid reader but I have been reading a lot lately.  I especially love to read in the summer time.  My dream vacation is a beach chair and a good book with my husband and no children.  We spent the last week at the beach and I was able to do a good bit of reading.

Forgotten God A million miles
God divinely intersected Francis Chan's book, Forgotten God, with Donald Miller's book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.  I actually started working through Forgotten God with my bible study late this Spring.  Then my husband gave me Donald Miller's book as part of my Mother's day gift.  Chan's book is about living each day in obedience to the Holy Spirit.  Miller's is about the story you write with your life.

I used to try to read one book at a time, but I am learning from my husband that it is not only ok, it is beneficial to read multiple books at a time.  These two books seemed to really hit my life at a great time.

I want to share them with you.  I will be giving a set away this week.  Leave a comment letting me know the best book you have read lately (any genre).  I will post the winner here Friday.

They’re ba-ack!

DSC_0472

My bird spirit lives on.  Here is a picture of one of my hanging plants on my front porch.  I haven't seen any birds in it yet.  Maybe they are done with it.  Maybe it is their vacation nest and they only come to it on the weekends.  I am just thankful this nest does not interfere with my daily life such as drying my clothes or opening my front door.
